Dual Language Information Meeting

We are proud to announce that Linda Herrington Elementary will be a Dual Language campus. Please read the information below and attend the informational meeting at Union Hill Elementary on Monday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m.

INFORMATIONAL MEETING
for
Dual Language Education

Developing Bi-Literate, Bi-Cultural, and Bilingual Students

Round Rock ISD is now offering an innovative program where children from all backgrounds will be empowered through Dual Language Education in English and Spanish. Union Hill Elementary and Herrington Elementary are seeking names of English speaking students entering Pre-Kindergarten through 3rd Grade who are interested in learning more about the Dual Language Program. This information meeting is also for any 4th and 5th grade students who are interested in Spanish Enrichment through this new program.

Program Goals:
  • Develop reading, writing and speaking in both English and Spanish
  • Build a strong academic base in both languages
  • Grow appreciation of other cultures
When entering today’s workforce, job candidates who speak multiple languages are in high demand. Research tells us that developing a second language as a young learner is much easier than acquiring a second language as an adult.

Consider giving your child the gift of bilingualism by learning Spanish at a young age! Please call us to learn more and/or attend the Parent Information Meeting.

Parent Information Meeting:
May 2, 2011
Union Hill Elementary Cafeteria at 6:30

If you have any questions please call us at 424-8700 and ask for Ms. Guerra.

Schools hold hazardous transportation hearings

A review of hazardous transportation routes for several schools in the district will occur stemming from elementary school boundary changes for the 2011-2012 school year due to the opening of Linda Herrington Elementary School. Potential hazard reduction areas include Callison Elementary, Herrington Elementary, Spicewood Elementary and Deerpark Middle School.

District policy states that Round Rock ISD does not provide bus transportation to students who live within two miles of their home campus; however, routes are reviewed and graded on hazardous conditions. If a route meets certain hazardous requirements, the district will provide student transportation to their home campus.

District staff has prepared several possible hazardous transportation adjustment scenarios that address updated service due to roadway changes at existing campuses. These scenarios will be presented to the public at a series of hazardous transportation hearings in accordance with Board Policy. The Hearing for Herrington ES currently scheduled at 6:30 p.m. at the following location:

  •  April 18 - Stony Point HS (Herrington Elementary hearing)

Hazardous transportation is reviewed to update service due to roadway and school assignment changes in the district. The opening of Herrington Elementary affects the Old Settlers neighborhoods above Old Settlers Park and the Paloma Lake subdivision. There are also several areas that have walkway changes since the last hazardous transportation review that will potentially no longer qualify for bus service.

Public input is also welcomed at the April 21, 2011 regular board meeting where the board will discuss feedback from these hearings. A final recommendation is expected to be presented to the Board of Trustees at a special called meeting in May 2011 for approval of the boundary changes.

District’s newest elementary to be named Linda Herrington ES

The Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees approved the name for the district's 32nd elementary school during its board meeting Thursday night. The board voted unanimously to accept the citizen's school naming committee's recommendation to name the school in honor of Linda Herrington who was a longtime district employee.

Herrington served as a teacher at several campuses before being named the district’s first female secondary school principal at Grisham Middle School in 1987. She also opened the second Hopewell Middle School in 2001 where she served as principal until her retirement from public education in 2003. Linda Herrington passed away on Oct. 9, 2010.

The new campus is located in the Paloma Lake subdivision and will open in Aug. 2011.
